Dealing with legal issues of any kind can be very stressful. But if you find the right lawyer, he or she can be a major factor in reducing that stress. (And yes, the wrong lawyer can certainly exacerbate that stress!)
And let’s be honest — lawyers aren’t cheap. So if you are spending a significant amount of money (not to mention all the time & energy, too) on a lawyer, then you need to make sure you are working with the right lawyer.
Here are some insider tips (from an actual lawyer!) on how to not just find any lawyer, but how to find the right lawyer for you.
To begin, it’s helpful if you have a general understanding of how us lawyers operate. Most of us specialize in a particular area of law. It used to be pretty common for lawyers to be generalists: “we do a little bit of this, little of that, sure I can help you with this” kinda thing. Those lawyers certainly still exist, but it is much more common these days for lawyers to specialize in certain areas.
Most of us do not know ALL of the laws; we either know a little about a lot, or we know a lot about a little. I, for example, know a lot about trademarks and Colorado LLCs. And I know very little about divorce, bankruptcy, and personal injury. So the first step in finding the right lawyer is knowing what kind of lawyer you need.
If you’re looking to file bankruptcy, for example, then you need to find a bankruptcy lawyer. If you are being charged with a crime, then you’d want a lawyer who does criminal law or criminal defense. Getting divorced, dealing with child custody, or adopting a child? Then you’d want someone who practices family law. Issues with an employee or employer? Then employment law. If you’re in a car accident, get bitten by a dog, or slip and fall in the grocery store, then you’ll want someone who knows personal injury law. If you need help with starting a business, then, of course, you would look for a business attorney (like me!). Speaking of, contact us today if you need help with your business.
